The “missing” 68 votes situation at the ANC Elective Conference has lead to everything the ANC didn’t want it to. The ANC could be about to face another court battle.
Advocate Dali Mpofu has told eNCA that he is leading two teams of lawyers that worked through Monday night with ANC complaints preparing court papers to challenge the outcome of the Secretary General position. The two teams are from Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
The teams are now waiting for further orders to see whether they should head to the courts urgently on Wednesday or act on the matter at a later stage. The one team is set to call for a recount solely for the Secretary General votes. The other could potentially call for a revote of all the top six positions.
The call for just a Secretary General recount would make the most sense as it is the only position in the top six that could see the outcome change with the introduction of the new 68 votes.
Insiders still hope that a political solution can be found as a court battle could potentially nullify the entire conference.
Any change to the SG position could see Senzo Mchunu take over the position from Ace Magashule. Mchunu was on the Ramaphosa slate while Magashule is known for his links to the Guptas and corrupt ANC dealings.
